Ready for Launch
Yesterday- 4-4-10 we drove to an area in Titusville, FL directly across from Kennedy Space Center and approx. 20 miles from the launch pad. This was the closest and best viewing spot known by locals to watch the launch without being on KSC property (sold out). We arrived here about 11:00am (19 1/2 hours before launch) praying for no delays. What was funny was there was a single palm tree near the road and we followed its little shadow all day dragging the lawn chairs until we couldn't move any further. The pics show how the area looked when we arrived. By 5:00am this morning there was not a square inch of space available. Motorhomes, tents, trailers, lawn chairs & spectators by the thousands were present. We never imagined there was still this much interest in the shuttle program after all these years. We made a bed in the back seat of the truck for Carol and Joe Cocker and Sophie and I shared the front seats. We might have gotten an hour of sleep as there was hundreds of people milling around and traffic steadily increasing all thru the night. Needless to say, we were totally exhausted by the time we got back to the trailer an hour after lift-off (fighting traffic). With that I'll say and Carol agree's, it was worth EVERY MINUTE.
